Fly Fishing at Sunday River

I don’t go fly fishing. As much as I love to live in the outdoors, there are some things that I don’t think this city boy will ever master. Fly fishing is one of them. So when I was asked to take some family photos at a “secret spot” at the outskirts of Bethel, I leapt at the chance.

Penny first contacted me because she wanted to capture her husband and two sons doing what they love more than anything – casting flies in the pristine rivers of Maine. During our consultation, it was clear that Penny didn’t want posed photos, but instead wanted candid, lifestyle images.

I met the family at their home and we drove out to their spot together. Instantly, the boys donned their waders and headed for the river.

Shooting from the banks of the river gave me an opportunity to really blend into the environment and capture them fishing without distraction. I’ve been shooting outdoor lifestyle images for years but every job is different, so I found myself mixing artsy shots with action shots, thinking about providing a variety of images for Penny.

After a bit of fishing (sadly, no bites) I took some new headshots for one of the boys and we wrapped up the session. A few weeks later, I was able to provide the family with some gorgeous prints as well as a hand-stitched leather bound album with a ton of great photos.

These are the images they will have for the rest of their lives, and I felt so honored that they trusted me to capture them. Now if I could only figure out how to cast….
